Sponsored by Embotics Corporation, the e-Book "Managing Virtual Environments: Best Practices" is written by a leading industry expert Anil Desai, who draws on his past experience as a data center manager with extensive experience managing environments of thousands of virtual machines as well as his books on this subject.
The e-Book is intended to give the reader a good understanding of virtualization technology as well as best practices for implementing and managing production deployments.
Like most technologies, virtualization has its share of potential management issues. Fortunately, through the use of planning and automation, organizations can maintain control of their IT infrastructures while maximizing their investments in virtualization.
This free eBook will show you how.
The e-Book is being published one chapter at a time on a monthly basis.
The First Chapter "Realizing the Power of Virtualization"
The first chapter, Realizing the Power of Virtualization, introduces the reader to the underyling technology of virtualization and looks at its many potential benefits in today’s datacenter. Of course, as with any technology, it’s important to recognize that virtualization is not without potential drawbacks and management concerns.
Future chapters will cover many important issues and challenges inherent in the use of virtual environments. The goal is to offer a collection of best practices to deal with challenges and ensure that you obtain the maximum benefit of virtualization, while at the same time staying in control of your entire IT environment.

The third chapter "Virtualization Management Challenges"
The third
chapter, Virtualization Management Challenges, provides an overview of the major administration issues that organizations must consider when implementing server virtualization. This includes the topic of “VM sprawl” and associated challenges.
The chapter begins with a discussion of management and control. Whereas some management tasks are similar between physical and virtual systems, VMs also pose additional concerns. Virtual environments that are not managed correctly often experience the problem of VM sprawl which can pose serious security, performance, manageability, and availability issues. The chapter concludes with a look at best practices in controlling VMs, discussing the importance of uniquely identifying and tracking their history, keeping track of their purpose and function, and retiring unnecessary ones from virtual environments.

Chapter 4, “Monitoring Virtualization Performance” provides details about how organizations should monitor their virtual systems to ensure reliability, performance, and uptime.
Chapter 5, “Optimizing Virtualization Performance” introduces the topics of capacity planning, resource optimization, and maximizing hardware system utilization.
Chapter 6, “Policies and Processes for Virtualization Management” examines best practices for creating, defining, and enforcing organized rules in a virtualized environment.
Chapter 7, “Implementing SLAs and Charge-Backs” presents two methods for managing and accounting for computer resource costs throughout the environment while ensuring a close alignment between business and technology.
Chapter 8, “Backups, Availability, and Disaster Recovery for Virtual Environments” covers methods by which organizations can implement data protection based on budget, human resources, and technical constraints.
Chapter 9, “Automating Virtualization Management” describes ways in which organizations can incorporate the many best practices covered in earlier chapters will minimizing time and effort requirements. The goal is to scale to supporting large virtual environments while minimizing costs and related overhead.
Chapter 10, “Evaluating Automated Virtualization Management Solutions” builds on the topics presented in Chapter 9 by providing a checklist of features IT departments should look for in automated virtualization management solutions.
