Virtual server sprawl highlights security concerns
By:Jon Brodkin Network World April 30, 2008
Think server sprawl is bad now? Just wait till you experience virtual server sprawl. When users can clone a virtual machine with the click of a mouse, or save versions of applications and operating systems for later use, you're asking for trouble if IT doesn't maintain tight control, virtualization management vendor Embotics warned in a session at Interop Las Vegas Tuesday.
Virtualization is not just about server consolidation
By: Rafael Ruffolo April 04, 2008
Gartner is bullish on the virtualization market, forecasting more than four million
virtual machines will be installed on x86 servers next year, and 660 million virtualized
machines in total by 2011. But one developer thinks that’s a bit too
optimistic. Find out why …
Managing Virtual Sprawl: VirtualCenter to the Rescue
By: Jeff James Windows IT Pro March 26, 2008
VMware’s answer to SCVMM is VMware VirtualCenter, a VM management product that has been on the market far longer than Microsoft’s solution. That market seniority shows, as VirtualCenter provides a number of features that SCVMM lacks, including the ability to live migrate virtual machine disks from one storage device to another with VMware VMotion. …

Guest "break-out" attacks, where the bad guys break out of a guest
virtual machine to attack the hypervisor and gain control of the host,
are also being tried, said David M. Lynch, vice president of marketing
at Embotics, adding that "the only question is, when, not if, a viable
attack will occur?" There may be such an attack this year, Lynch added.

Video: Product Demo from Jean-Marc Seguin, Chief Architect with Embotics
By Robin Wauters
February 27, 2008
This video interview was recorded at VMWorld Europe 2008 in Cannes, France, and features Jean-Marc Seguin, Chief Architect with Embotics. The interview is part of the Virtualization Video Series, a recurring theme on Virtualization.com featuring interviews with key players from the industry, event reports, etc.
The promise of virtual machines is that operators don’t need to worry
about where their servers are. You can have one big server running on
five physical computers, or a hundred tiny servers running on one
physical machine. This makes it easy to adjust capacity; it also means
creating a new server is as simple as dragging and dropping.

Top Ten Virtualization Risks Hiding in Your Company
Laurianne McLaughlin
February 12, 2008
What are the management risks and problems hiding inside your
virtualization effort? That's a question that David Lynch, VP of
marketing for Embotics, tries to help IT groups answer. Embotics, part
of CIO's recent list of 10 virtualization vendors to watch, provides
what it calls VM lifecycle management. The company's V-Commander
software (which integrates with VMware's VirtualCenter management
suite) promises to help you track VMs from cradle to grave. The tool
lets IT groups apply policies and automation to that tagging and
tracking work.
Despite the growing prominence of server virtualization in data
centers, many IT managers are concerned about their ability to manage
virtual environments effectively.
According to a new study sponsored by Islandia, N.Y.-based CA Inc. of
300 IT managers worldwide, 54% of large enterprises rate virtual
machine management as a critical or high IT priority, but only 45% said
that their companies are doing an effective job in managing the
technology.

Undocumented, unlabeled Virtual Machines are capable of terrorizing your infrastructure. A lot of firms are using, given the current horizontalized global market which is not an easy place to be around if you have a weak stomach, more "Adventurous or Exploratory Research Designs". I have spoken to one firm called Embotics and they are really very much into this, doing it closely with their partners, so a lot of things are happening behind closed doors..

If server virtualization has a dark side, it may be virtual machine (VM) sprawl. The principal problem created by sprawl is that IT administrators can't certify that all deployed VMs meet an organization's policies and procedures just as they would certify physical servers. Solving -- or preventing -- the problem of VM sprawl may necessitate automated management tools for such activities as inventory, authorization and configuration management. But while such tools have been a mainstay in managing and taking inventory of physical servers.
This past year was a important year for the virtualization industry. For the first time Virtualization became a household name with the VMware IPO and the acquisition of XenSource by Citrix. It was easy to see that virtualization had infiltrated the production environment and was here to stay as companies were now more concerned with the management issues around virtualization rather than the technology itself. VSM asked some of the notable players within the virtualization industry, including Embotics' VP of Marketing David Lynch, this question: In your opinion, what was the most remarkable event, announcement or product of 2007...and why? Here’s what they had to say.
