Forbes: Why A Former VMware CTO Is Joining Cloud Startup Embotics: 'VMware Is In A Tough Place'

Scott Davis spent seven years at VMware VMW -0.30% as its chief technology officer for end user computing. As he joins an emerging competitor, he says VMware’s cloud strategy is on course for more choppy waters.

“They’re trying to create buzz in different areas, but VMware has changed its cloud strategy constantly,” Davis says. “They’ve made many pivots.”

The problem for VMware, Davis argues, is that VMware reached the scale at which it needs to push a small number of large-scale, bottom-line moving products. But major customers using VMware today aren’t using it primarily in the area in which VMware and its competitors see the most growth, the cloud. Instead VMware’s virtualization tools still often operate in on-premise architectures. “The trends they developed seeded the cloud revolution, but they made a lot of missteps in the cloud. Now they need big solutions to be able to sell, but they have to maintain relevance, too.”

Former VMware Executive Joins Embotics as CTO

Former VMware Executive Scott Davis Joins Embotics as Chief Technology Officer

Davis Will Drive Embotics’ Product and Technology Strategy Innovation

OTTAWA, Ontario – September 20, 2016Embotics, the cloud automation company, today announced that Scott Davis has joined the company as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Davis spent seven years at VMware, most recently as CTO of the company’s end-user computing business unit where he was instrumental in building that $1B business while driving product and technology strategy, partnerships and engineering initiatives across VMware’s product lines.

“Since my pioneering work on containers at VMware, I’ve been passionate about driving next-generation application architectures such as microservices and serverless computing. Embotics’ cloud automation platform is directly aligned with my interests and the opportunity to join the team was one I couldn’t pass up,” said Scott Davis. “Embotics has a deep and nuanced understanding of their customers’ need for agile cross-cloud infrastructure automation that can enable them to capitalize on new business opportunities quickly. As DevOps methodology, microservices, PaaS and clouds become pervasive technologies for business applications, flexible automation that effectively bridges and seamlessly coordinates both IT and developer needs for component orchestration across disparate clouds is required. Legacy-style integrated management suites are simply too complex to deploy and not agile enough for these environments. I look forward to working with and expanding the fantastic roster of customers and a talented management team.”

At Embotics, Davis will be responsible for managing technology and product strategy for vCommander, the company’s award-winning solution for hybrid cloud automation. Davis will also head up the Office of the CTO, an Advanced Technology Team chartered with accelerating value through new technology innovation.
