How “Cloud First” Decisions Mirror R&D Outsourcing

As someone who has the privilege of regularly engaging with IT executives and architects, it’s clear to me that the push to public cloud continues. For your elastic consumption or infinite scale requirements, it just makes good sense. And if I was starting a new company today, I’d likely go all in on public cloud.

Hybrid Cloud and Automation at VMworld 2016

At this year’s VMworld, VMware finally admitted what many of us have been saying for a long time. It’s a hybrid cloud world, and for most that hybrid cloud is VMware’s hypervisor coupled with another vendor’s public cloud offering.

The Hybrid Cloud Secret Square

Top business and cloud pundits have written about how IT is moving to a hybrid world. The move is fueled by unabated growth in public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) consumption and the reality that many organizations also consume their own significant data center assets.

VM Sprawl Is Back, And This Time It’s Out In Public

Back in the early days of virtualization adoption, VM sprawl and over-provisioning were quite common. It was simple to create new VMs by effectively copying and pasting. VMs were also frequently over-provisioned, because they were deployed with the same resources as physical servers.

Delivering Cloud Automation: Why Pour Your Own Cement?

On my summer vacation I was building a boat rack for my cottage. Then a strange thought occurred to me: This is completely analogous to building out cloud automation.

Yes, I know some might think that’s a bit of a stretch, but follow my story and you’ll see why.

How Public Cloud Consumption Impacts Private Cloud Cost Visibility

Two years ago, when I talked to enterprise customers about their cloud management platform (CMP) needs, many of the business drivers were the same as today. These included the desire to move to an ITaaS (IT as a Service) model, to embrace automation, and especially to increase business agility. But in that same time frame, I have noticed a significant shift in one aspect of private cloud adoption: how enterprises think about cost visibility and chargeback.

The ROI of Your Cloud Management Platform

As IT organizations move towards adopting a private cloud model, many are trying to quantify the return-on-investment (ROI) of their cloud. The case for moving to a self-service cloud model is largely based on business agility, and most organizations readily admit that this is their primary driver as exhibited by this Gartner survey:

Cloud Management Software: Department Spending Reporting

Are you looking for a way to show departments what they spend?

Embotics has embedded simple-to-identify metrics based on real-life customers to compare your costs with other organizations. This enables you to show your users how they are doing compared to the budget and to other departments.

With our comprehensive Embotics® vCommander™ Cost Modeling feature, you can quickly create independent cost models for multiple hypervisors and clouds for effective workload cost comparisons. Furthermore, you can provide decision makers and stakeholders with cost transparency for informed budgetary planning, and assign ancillary costs such as support, monitoring, patch management, etc., to VMs.

With an average deployment time of less than one hour, and the ability to incorporate historical data, Embotics vCommander can demonstrate value to all stakeholders within hours—thus paying for itself in just one day.

Additionally, the ability to assign additional metadata for reporting and identification of departments, as well as the information regarding the lineage of the machine, is always included with vCommander, thus enabling accurate showback.

Embotics vCommander features include:

Chargeback & IT Costing

  • Assign and track virtual asset costs in real time
  • Provide end users with cost transparency and showback or chargeback, enabling archiving, placement and budgetary planning
  • Report on virtual infrastructure costs and growth trends

Reporting Analytics & Visualization

  • Acquire fully customized advanced search and reporting capabilities to meet all your reporting needs
  • Access with a single click an extensive library of out-of-the-box and best practice reports covering virtualization and cloud management

Comprehensive Cost Modeling

Cloud Cost Models

On your journey to Cloud Services you’ll eventually have to look at costs and chargeback, or at the very least a showback, as these are essential elements of the cloud computing paradigm.

When Veeam Meets Embotics vCommander: The Merger of Backup and Cloud Automation

The story of the Veeam integration with Embotics vCommander started when our Lead Systems Engineer Colin Jack developed his own Veeam PowerShell snaps and scripts to add into vCommander for increased backup. Veeam PowerShell is a task-automation scripted language for Microsoft applications that can be used to automatically start a weekly, daily or even hourly backup. From these first scripts, Colin worked with developers and created a more secure, high-feature snap with safe and secure credentials.

So, why should your enterprise consider configuring Veeam backup solutions through your cloud management platform? Because as the need for cloud automation within your data center increases, virtual machines (VMs) will become more efficient, but there is a greater risk for backup errors. If a disaster were to occur, the trouble caused to your data backup could lead to misallocation of resources and big problems for your data center. To prevent this issue, enterprises can integrate Veeam with vCommander in a few different ways:
